Hangin’ tough. Stayin’ hungry.
You go, Survivor! I used to check their Eye of the Tiger album out of the library all the time when I was nine and ten years old, and I played this song constantly. I loved the Rocky movies—still do—and I will always associate “Eye of the Tiger” with Rocky Balboa and Clubber Lang.
The video for the song really has nothing to do with anything, but that’s how most early 80s videos were. The band walks down the street and winds up in some sort of indoor junkyard with old bathtubs and rusty cars. This, of course, is their rehearsal space, and they proceed to rock the fuck out, 1982 style.
The guitar hook is tremendous, and if you’re in my generation it brings a guitar-faced smile to your face immediately. It’s one of the most fun songs to sing along to, and I’m sure it’s stupid popular at karaoke. “Eye of the Tiger” was everywhere you turned back in the day, and it had sold two million vinyl copies by August of 1982. When you add in vinyl and CD sales and digital downloads since then, those nine million copies make it one of the best-selling singles of all time. Who knew?
