Sometimes disco is the only thing that can soothe your soul. It’s mindless, funky, and sexy. Every song doesn’t have to be profound and change the world.
I’ve never been a disco hater. I was a kid when it was popular, and I didn’t know anything about the anti-disco movement. Burning records you hate makes no sense to me. You paid for it, so why are you destroying it? A lot of people burned Beatles records after John Lennon made his infamous God comment. Do people get outraged because other people are outraged? Do you honestly not like something anymore because other people don’t like it? Or because other people do like it? Why can’t you just enjoy something because it makes you feel good?
More than once in my writing have I referred to Dave Grohl’s brilliant comment on guilty pleasures, and it definitely applies to disco.
“I don’t believe in guilty pleasures. If you fucking like something, like it. That’s what’s wrong with our generation: that residual punk rock guilt, like, ‘You’re not supposed to like that. That’s not fucking cool.’ Don’t fucking think it’s not cool to like Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic.’ It is cool to like Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’! Why the fuck not? Fuck you! That’s who I am, goddamn it! That whole guilty pleasure thing is full of fucking shit.”
Like what you like without any guilt or explanation. “Boogie Oogie Oogie” actually does speak to that.
If you’re thinkin’ you’re too cool to boogie
Boy oh boy, have I got news for you
Everybody here tonight must boogie
Let me tell ya, you are no exception to the rule
It might just change your life to let your body go and feel all of it.
